I was addicted to porn for over 30 years. When I was…[arrested]…I had approximately 550 VHS tapes that were all gay, about 200 to 250 DVDs, and anywhere from 11[00] to 1500 books and magazines that were all gay. I would get a catalogue in the mail, thumb through it, pick out a bunch of stuff, call an 800 number, give them the debit card, and spent $375. Two days later I got another catalogue from another company, I spent another 200-and-something dollars. I spent a whole lot. I spent enough money in that 30 years’ time to buy a nice house, a nice car, and live comfortably….The addiction was just running my life. I would get paid on a Friday from work, go to the bank, drive 20 miles to the porn store and spend anywhere from $85 to $150 in magazines and DVDs.

Although his description of his addiction suggests a high degree of active engagement and commitment, Alan downplays the role of agency in his offending. Some he characterises as almost accidental: “I used to pick up all kinds of books and magazines without looking at them”. By his own admission, Alan also blamed others, at least in part, for his offending. He recounted that the owner of a store from which he purchased pornography would allow him to purchase material on credit, thus “feeding my addiction”:
